Handbrake is an opensource software that allows you to put your dvds on your computer and save them to your harddrive.  This can be extremely useful when one is going away to college.  This solution allows one to put the dvds they (or their family) currently own onto their laptop so they can watch them when they are away from home.  Also, it reduces the space taken up by the dvds, and large collections take up a LOT of room!

We first saw Belkin’s slick-looking wireless HDMI kit at CES, when it was due in September for about $600. Now dubbed FlyWire (nice and catchy!), they’ve got two initial entries: FlyWire will shoot full 1080p goodness using the 5GHz band to anywhere in your house, walls be damned, for $999. Plus, it has an IR backchannel for controlling hidden AV devices. Or FlyWire R1 gets you in-room wireless for $699.99.
FlyWire is set for October, though those looking for the mildly cheaper in-room option will have to wait until early next year. Both of them are pricier than Monster’s $600 wireless HDMI setup, which is also supposed to hit in October (though it cheats a bit by using UWB-over-Coax to nail whole-home streaming). Check out all the specs below to compare for yourself:

Hi Everybody!
If you listen to the companies selling the equipment, there’s no doubt about it. Monster promises, “a more natural sound, increased dynamic range, and the most vivid video images possible,” and includes a highly suspect comparison to back up its claims. Similarly, Panamax claims, “improved picture and sound quality from AV component sources” from its $500 surge protector. (We did notice that Belkin–another major manufacturer of surge protectors–makes no claims of improved AV quality.)
So is the marketing hype true? As far as we can tell, no. In terms of video quality, we’ve never seen any difference from the Monster surge protector compared to other surge protectors, or even compared to plugging components directly into the wall–and we’re constantly looking for even the slightest video artifacts. Maybe I just have good, “clean” power, but we haven’t noticed any differences in our personal home theaters either.

Barbara Klinger hat die noch wenige bekannte Kultur des Heimkinos untersucht. In ihrem Buch “Beyond the Multiplex: Cinema, New Technologies, and the Home” (University of California Press) nimmt sie sich fünf Aspekte dieser kulturellen Alltagspraxis vor:

Die Liebhaber von High End-Technik für das Kino zuhause.
Die Sammler von Filmen auf DVD nach der Ära der Videokassette.
Das Kabelfernsehen als Medium der nationalen Filmgeschichte am Beispiel von American Movie Classics (AMC).
Das Vergnügen, Filme nach eigenen Wünschen mehrfach ansehen zu können.
Das Genre des parodistischen Kurzfilms im Web.

Leider werden diese spannenden Themen nicht wirklich erforscht, wie es vielleicht ein Ethnologe mit seinem Instrumentarium machen könnte. Lediglich die Texte der Beteiligten, vowiegend die der Anbieter, werden mit den Methoden der Cultural Studies untersucht. Das gilt vor allem für die ersten drei Kapitel:

Já rodei dois shoppings inteiros e não achei um par de pedestais para comprar para meu Home Theater. Será que é algo tão raro assim? Hoje cheguei a encontrar um em uma loja do Nova América (sim sai do Norte shopping e fui para o nova américa…), mas era algo digno de se chamar de tosco e o vendedor ainda disse que eu teria que caçar parafusos em lojas de material de construção… fala sério!
Acabei de comprar um par pela Americanas.com sem stress e com frete grátis…
